Hygienist Therapist

In one of our previous blogs we talked about preventative dentistry and its importance to maintain your oral health. Part of this care is regular visits to a hygienist. The majority of our patients see our hygienist therapists every three - four months but we will tailor the frequency of your visits to your needs.

Our hygienist therapists are highly qualified and during your appointments will carry out thorough assessments of your teeth and gums. They are trained to give individually tailored oral hygiene instructions and advise you on how to maintain your oral health at its best, including at home care. We believe it is particularly important to teach good oral hygiene from a young age, so our hygienists are excellent at showing your children what to do to achieve this.

They will also perform full mouth cleanings on every patient. This involves using a variety of techniques to clean the plaque and tartar off your teeth. This stops inflammation and bleeding of the gums, and helps prevent gum disease. We advise that this is done every 3 months if you smoke.

One technique used is our EMS Guided Biofilm machine. It enables our hygienists to clean external tooth surface stains often caused by tobacco, tea, coffee and wine in a non invasive way. It is completely painless, highly effective, and the results are instantly visible. To learn more click here.

If you want your teeth even whiter we can discuss in surgery and at home whitening treatments. Have a look at our Tooth whitening page for all of the information.

To review, During your appointment our hygienists will:

  • Check your gums for inflammation (gingivitis – bleeding gums)

  • Check your plaque levels

  • Clean off plaque and tartar, the latter of which cannot be removed with a toothbrush. Leaving this behind can cause gum disease and bone loss leading to tooth mobility and, ultimately, tooth loss

  • Dietary advice to help prevent tooth decay and maintain healthy gums

  • Screen for oral cancer, gum disease and bone loss

  • Show you the skills, tools and techniques of effective plaque removal.

  • Remove stains caused by coffee, tea, tobacco etc using the EMS Guided Biofilm machine

  • Advise on causes and prevention of bad breath (halitosis)

  • Advise and support on stopping smoking
